It is with heavy heart we announce that Arion Therapeutic Farm is looking for a new home to be the ultimate sanctuary for people and animals.
Arion has been greatly affected by Covid with an overall decrease of revenue at 54% compared to the same period last year. Summer is usually our opportunity to earn income to help us ride the typically slow winter months. At this time there are only a handful of weekly therapeutic clients (compared to 50), a few regular volunteers and far less tour visits than we would have hoped. Various efforts to raise income through other means is met with ongoing bylaw restrictions and/or insurance increases. We have hired numerous business professionals and experts in marketing (even the best of Kelowna) but to no avail.
We are extremely grateful to everyone who helped Arion over its 11 years in Kelowna. This farm and it’s animals has positively impacted thousands of people. We will maintain our commitment to the cause we created and continue to offer our peaceful farm sanctuary to the public once we find a new home. We are a special haven for many people living with complex needs and hope that they will still be able to access our new location.
Given we are already not breaking even in the busy season, we can safely expect this trend to continue into next year. We have chopped our expenses as much as we can without giving away our animals, and of course are not prepared to do this, therefore feel the responsible decision is to sell this property and find one more sustainable for our operation.
A special thank you to the Capri Rotary club for their support since 2009 when we opened and to the various other groups who have helped us over the years, including The United Way, a few other Rotary Clubs who sent work party groups and significant facility improvements to help keep the farm looking so spectacular. Long term volunteers Penny Chapman and Lyn Demchuck have dedicated their lives almost daily. These special ladies, a handful of members and volunteers together with our family’s continual donation of time and money is the reason we are still open and giving back to our community. We will remain open for business until further notice.
We hope the next owner will love this farm the way we do as it is a truly magical piece of land!
Sincerely, Heather & Chris Henderson Saundra Cowen
